What heartburn feels like
Heartburn is a burning pain behind the breastbone that may rise toward your throat. It often starts after eating, when bending over, or when lying down.
Heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD
Heartburn is a symptom. Acid reflux is what causes it: stomach acid moving up into the esophagus. When reflux is frequent or causes damage, it's called GERD.
When to see a doctor
- Heartburn more than twice a week
- Symptoms that continue despite over-the-counter medication
- Trouble swallowing, nausea, or weight loss
- Many years of heartburn, which raises the chance of Barrett's esophagus
Dr. Forohar can recommend treatment and, when needed, an upper endoscopy to look for the cause.
