When to start

Adults at average risk should begin screening at age 45. You may need to start earlier if a close family member had colon cancer or advanced polyps, or if you have inflammatory bowel disease or certain genetic conditions.

Screening options

A colonoscopy is the only test that both finds and removes polyps in the same visit. If results are normal and you're at average risk, it's usually repeated every 10 years.

Stool-based tests are another option for some people, but a positive result means you'll need a colonoscopy to follow up.

Don't wait for symptoms

Early colon cancer often causes no symptoms at all. That's why screening matters even when you feel well. If you do have bleeding, a change in bowel habits, or unexplained anemia, don't wait for your screening age. Call us.
